Superman: The Movie

Superman: The Movie

$12.35

Richard Donner’s big-budget blockbuster Superman: The Movie is an immensely entertaining recounting of the origin of the famous comic book character. Opening on Krypton (where Marlon Brando plays Superman’s father), the film follows the Man of Steel (Christopher Reeve) as he’s sent to Earth where he develops his alter-ego Clark Kent and is raised by a Midwestern family. In no time, the movie has run through his teenage years, and Clark gets a job at the Daily Planet, where he is a news reporter. It’s there that he falls in love with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), who is already in love with Superman. But the love story is quickly sidetracked once the villainous Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) launches a diabolical plan to conquer the world and kill Superman. Superman: The Movie is filled with action, special effects and a surprising amount of humor. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Trailer: The Movie

$15.02

Two movie buffs suddenly begin living out their widescreen fantasies in this offbeat comic fantasy. Dip (Will Pope) and Val (Ian McCrudden) are two guys who live for the movies and dream of making a feature film themselves one day. One night, after sneaking in to their favorite theater, the guys are entranced by two beautiful women they see in a “coming attractions” trailer. They each wish they could live inside a movie with lovely women like that — and suddenly they’re transported into an alternate reality where they really are living in the overdrawn world of the movies, and with Penny (Miranda Hicks) and Anne (Marjorie Crigler) at their side, they get to live out their grandest cinematic fantasies. Trailer: The Movie is the first feature film for writer and director Ian McCrudden, who also plays Val. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Dirt! The Movie

Dirt! The Movie

$15.42

The expression “common as dirt” wouldn’t exist if there weren’t an awful lot of dirt in this world. But is there as much as we think — or even as much as we need? And what’s been happening to it? Dirt is the outer layer of the Earth and the place where nearly all the world’s vegetation comes to life, but the 20th Century was a bad time for dirt — the rise of corporate farming practices have led to reliance of fertilizers with negative long-term effects on the soil, while clear-cutting of rainforests and global warming are making it harder to grow the food the world needs, making workable soil an increasingly scarce commodity. Filmmakers Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow offer a witty but incisive look at dirt, what’s in it, how it’s used and how we must protect it in the documentary Dirt! The Movie. Adapted in part from the book Dirt! The Ecstatic Skin of Earth by William Bryant Logan, Dirt! The Movie received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The show business comedy See This Movie stars Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers as Jake Barrymore, a wannabe director who pretends he has a finished film in order to network at the Montreal Film Festival. Midnight Movie

Midnight Movie

$6.88

A midnight screening of a 1970s cult horror film becomes a wholesale bloodbath after the members of the audience see one of their friends butchered on the big screen, and quickly surmise that there’s a madman in the theater who seeks to slaughter them all. It was just another rundown movie house in a small suburban town — what better place for a screening of a true cult classic? But this isn’t your typical horror film, because years ago, the director had been locked away in a psychiatric hospital after having a complete mental breakdown. The teens at the screening have no idea that he escaped from the hospital nearly five years ago, and that chances are good he’s still out there somewhere. When the film starts to roll and the heckling begins, the atmosphere in the theater is loose and fun. Giddiness gives way to deep-rooted dread, however, when the horrified audience is forced to watch as one of their good friends is viciously murdered right before their very eyes. This is no movie, and when the audience tries to flee they realize that the same psycho they just saw on the silver screen has now trapped them all in the theater. With no hope of escape and their numbers thinning fast, the survivors must now figure out a way to turn the tables on the very same killer that they once rooted for in their favorite slasher flick. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Socalled Movie

The Socalled Movie

$17.24

If Josh Dolgin isn’t one of the most culturally and creatively eclectic musicians at work today, it’s hard to imagine who has him beat. Dolgin is a gay Jewish French-Canadian who plays piano and accordion, dabbles in rap, and plays music that fuses funk and hip-hop with klezmer, a form of Jewish traditional music. Known as “Socalled” (for a while he used the stage name “Heavy J,” then changed it to “So-called Heavy J” before shortening it to Socalled), Dolgin has recorded a hip-hop interpretation of a traditional Jewish Seder (with guest appearances from both Matisyahu and Killah Priest) and appeared on a cruise for Jewish music fans, sailing down the Dnieper River as he performed with a live klezmer ensemble. Filmmaker Garry Beitel profiles the life and music of this one-of-a-kind talent in the documentary The “Socalled” Movie, in which Dolgin talks about his art and inspiration as well as showing off some of his own experiments in filmmaking. The “Socalled” Movie was an official selection at the 2010 Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Date Movie

Date Movie

$9.94

The glorious Hollywood institution of the romantic comedy gets raked over the coals in this broad parody of any number of boy-meets-girl flicks. Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan) is a young woman who wants nothing more than to find the man of her dreams and settle down. However, Julia has a rather serious weight problem that prevents her from making a positive impression on people. Determined to find love at all costs, Julia somehow drops the weight and meets Grant Fonckyerdoder (Adam Campbell), a handsome and charming Englishman who falls head over heels for her. Julia and Grant waste no time in setting the date, but until they make their way to the altar they have to deal with meddling parents, flaky wedding planners, fights over the right wedding dress, vertically challenged romantic advisors, and Andy (Sophie Monk), a longtime friend of Grant, who isn’t so happy to hear he’s getting hitched. Also featuring Fred Willard, Jennifer Coolidge, Eddie Griffin, and Tony Cox, Date Movie was written and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, proudly billed as “two of the six writers of Scary Movie.” ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Steal This Movie!

Steal This Movie!

$9.98

Steal This Movie! is a dramatic account of the tumultuous life and times of Abbie Hoffman, one of the most visible and influential figures of America’s 1960s counter-culture. (Its title was inspired by Hoffman’s irreverent “survival guide,” Steal This Book.) Hoffman’s founding of the Youth International Party (better known as the “Yippies”) and inventive acts of street theater — including an “exorcism” of the Pentagon and the riotous protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago — made him a household name and a star of the anti-war movement. They also earned him enemies, and he was eventually arrested for trying to sell cocaine to an undercover cop, a bust that he contended was a set-up meant to discredit him. Rather than face a long prison sentence, Hoffman went underground, leaving behind his wife and children and posing as “Barry Freed,” who became a respected environmental activist. In time, Freed acknowledged that he was Hoffman, spent two months in jail, and returned to activism full-time until his 1989 death. Steal This Movie stars Vincent D’Onofrio as Hoffman, Janeane Garofalo as his wife Anita, Kevin Corrigan as Jerry Rubin, Troy Garity as Tom Hayden, and Jeanne Tripplehorn as Joanna Lawrenson, who became romantically involved with Barry Freed. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

ABBA: The Movie

$16.04

ABBA, the spirited Swedish pop-singing group who skyrocketed to fame with their 1974 single “Waterloo,” star in this loosely constructed vehicle. The story involves the efforts of a diligent DJ to secure an interview with the group while they’re on tour in Australia. Eighteen of ABBA’s hits are heard on the soundtrack and seen in grainy 16 mm concert footage, shot in March 1977. ABBA: The Movie was thus filmed some five years prior to the group’s breakup. The film’s director was Sweden’s Lasse Hallstrom, who later gained infamy for his arthouse success My Life as a Dog (1985). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

MoveOn: The Movie

$6.93

A documentary look at one the most influential progressive grassroots movements of the 20th Century, MoveOn: The Movie details how a single e-mail birthed an organization that quickly grew to include over 5 million members. Filmed over the course of five years but compiled from hours upon hours of behind-the-scenes footage, director Alex Jordanov’s film explores the impact that a small collection of concerned citizens can have when they decide to pool their resources and push for change. Interviews with the staff and members of MoveOn offer an intimate look at the organization that has raised millions of dollars for the Democratic Party since it was founded in 1998. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie

The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie

$9.51

Comedy Central’s outrageously offensive cartoon reality show makes the leap to the big screen with this feature that finds the foul-mouthed housemates stunned to discover they can swear without being bleeped. Unfortunately, this curious development isn’t the result of more relaxed censorship laws, but rater due to the fact that their show has been canceled. Deeply infuriated yet determined to get their show back, Foxxy Love and the gang make way for Make-a-Point-Land, where they may just have one last shot at reclaiming their former television glory. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Silent Movie

Silent Movie

$9.79

Silent Movie is just that: a totally nonverbal comedy, save for one single line. Director Mel Brooks stars as a once-famous comedy director, who with his faithful assistants Dom DeLuise and Marty Feldman return to Hollywood with plans for a comeback. Brooks wants to return to the good old days by producing a silent movie (he explains this via subtitle). Producer Sid Caesar is agreeable, provided Brooks can line up top stars. In a series of vignettes better seen than described, Brooks persuades Burt Reynolds, Liza Minelli, Paul Newman, James Caan and Anne Bancroft (Brooks’ real-life wife) to star in his project. The only holdout is mime Marcel Marceau, who after a few moments of walking against the wind shouts the film’s solitary line: “No!” Meanwhile, the crooked executives of the Engulf and Devour conglomerate want to take over Caesar’s studio and are worried that Brooks’ film might be so huge a hit that Caesar won’t be interested in selling. To prevent this, the conglomerate dispatches sexy Bernadette Peters to lure Brooks into drink and ruination. The film’s climax is lifted from the 1943 Olsen and Johnson film Crazy House). Featured in brief comic cameos are Harry Ritz as the man with half a suit, Charlie Callas as the blind man, Dom DeLuise’s wife, Carol Arthur, as the incredibly pregnant woman, Fritz Feld as the headwaiter (whose trademarked “Pop” is conveyed on a subtitle) and Henny Youngman as the diner with a fly in his soup. Co-writers Ron Clark, Rudy DeLuca and Barry Levinson also show up on screen as three of the Engulf & Devour minions. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A young man without a purpose finds one bringing movies to the people in this comedy drama from Indian filmmaker Dev Benegal. Vishnu (Abhay Deol) is a guy in his mid-twenties who hasn’t figured out what he wants to do with his life yet, though he’s certain he doesn’t want to follow in the footsteps of his father, who peddles hair oil for a living. Years ago, Vishnu’s uncle operated a traveling movie theater, driving his truck through rural villages and setting up his makeshift cinema wherever he could find a paying audience. The uncle is donating his truck and projection equipment to a museum, and Vishnu has been drafted into taking the machine across the country to its new home. The rattletrap vehicle is a shadow of its former self, but as Vishnu rolls through the countryside it still attracts attention, and he picks up a handful of interesting hitchhikers en route, among them a young boy running away from home (Mohammed Faizal Usmani), a joyously opinionated old man (Satish Kaushik), and a beautiful woman (Tannishtha Chatterjee). And though the projectors don’t run much better than the truck, Vishnu finds there are still plenty of people interested in watching the old movies he’s carrying, and he unwittingly finds himself following his uncle’s footsteps as a gypsy showman. Road, Movie was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

American Movie centers on a low-budget horror-film buff named Mark Borchardt, who grew up on such horror classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead. Now in his late twenties, he has decided to make the ultimate horror opus in the form of an indie feature entitled Northwestern, the scariest film ever made in his Wisconsin town. Filled with determination and passion (and very little else), this documentary follows Mark for a year and a half in the making of Northwestern. The audience sees Mark fending off creditors, including the IRS, and avoiding child support payments so he can make this direct-to-video flick. His efforts to round up cast and crew are disastrous, as there is nobody in his town who shares his knowledge and passion for moviemaking. Eventually he decides to star in his film and wears a dozen crew members’ hats as writer, producer, director, cameraman, editor, and soundman. American Movie follows this man with a dream to his dying uncle’s trailer park, where he raises three thousand dollars. Unable to make an entire feature for that price, he scraps the idea in exchange for completing one of his many abandoned short films, Coven, which also premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. The end is a world premiere as satisfying as getting accepted into Sundance. ~ Arthur Borman, Rovi

Bean: The Movie

Bean: The Movie

$10.39

Comic actor Rowan Atkinson brought his bumbling character Mr. Bean from television to the big screen with this British comedy. Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) is a well-meaning but not especially bright fellow with a gift for making the worst of any situation. Bean is about to be fired from his job as a guard at the Royal Nation Art Gallery for sleeping on the job, but the Chairman (John Mills) intervenes at the last moment. To insure that his incompetence will manifest itself so completely that there will be no choice but to get rid of him, Bean’s superiors come up with a plan — they’ll send him to America to speak at a posh private gallery owned by George Grierson (Harris Yulin), where General Newton (Burt Reynolds) will display the most recent addition to his art collection, “Whistler’s Mother.” It’s even money whether or not the museum will still be standing before Bean is done; as if this weren’t enough, while in L.A. Bean is mistaken for a surgeon and forced to operate on an injured police officer. Richard Curtis, one of the film’s producers, said after viewing the final product, “It’s an unpleasant family movie. I’m very pleased.” ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The Rugrats Movie

The Rugrats Movie

$32.09

Based on the popular Nickelodeon TV series Rugrats, this is the first full-length feature animated movie to star the little tots. It’s the story of diaper-clad kids, told from a baby’s point- of-view, and they were one of the hottest-selling toy franchises of the late ’90s. The film features a hilarious musical number in the hospital nursery, where newborns have the voices of major rock stars that include Jakob Dylan (Bob Dylan’s son), Iggy Pop, Lou Rawls, Lisa Loeb, and Patti Smith, to name a few. The story escalates when self-proclaimed leader Tommy Pickles is thrust into an impossible situation with the birth of his new brother, Dil Pickles. This new kid is grabbing all the attention and won’t stop crying. With the help of other toddlers Lil and Phil, Tommy decides that the baby should be returned to the hospital for fixing. They all hop on their little wagon and take a high-speed ride straight into the deep woods where they realize they’re lost. Chased around by animals (or so they think), the Rugrats clan must get home in one piece. Other celebrity voices include Whoopi Goldberg and The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s Tim Curry, as well as Saturday Night Live’s Andrea Martin and David Spade. ~ Chris Gore, Rovi

Real: The Movie

Real: The Movie

$14.13

Helmed by Borja Manso, the Spanish-language omnibus feature Real: The Movie (aka Real, La Pelicula) pays homage to the Madrid-based Real soccer club, its superstar player, David Beckham, and its tie-in of international Real apparel, with a series of five fictional shorts and one documentary segment, connected only by their shared theme of the club itself. The first segment, set in Madrid, involves a rather low-key and ineffectual schoolteacher, Tomas (Javier Albala). At a loss to explain the enormous, sweeping popularity of Real, he decides to solve the mystery of the club’s rabid fan base by going straight to the heart of the action. The second, set in Japan, involves the insecure Koji (Keiichirou Sasaki), made increasingly jealous by his girlfriend Sayaka’s (Ari Ohta) preoccupation with Beckham. The third, set in Manhattan, involves amateur soccer player Megan’s (Jessica Bohl) crippling injury, and the inspirational stories of Real team member Ronaldo that help her bounce back. In the fourth, Maxi (Guillermo Herrera) and his grandfather Paul (Manuel Escolano), research the little-publicized 1963 kidnapping of Alfredo di Stefano. In the fifth, set in Senegal, die-hard Real fan Ansou must endure a two-day walk, once per week, just to reach a television set and catch a glimpse of his favorite team. And the closing number, set to inspirational music a la John Williams, houses tightly edited-together documentary footage of a shoot-out between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Throughout the effort, Manso intercuts a substantial amount of never-before-seen footage that depicts Real off the field. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The Movie Hero

The Movie Hero

$8.14

Blake (Jeremy Sisto) is like a lot of people living in L.A. He believes he has an audience following him around, watching everything he does. He addresses the camera nearly constantly, and it becomes clear that we are Blake’s audience. He spots a Suspicious Character (Peter Stormare of Fargo, who also contributes the film’s closing song) on the street and follows him. He tells the man, “I know what you did,” even though he doesn’t know. The cops warn Blake to stop harassing people, but he owes it to his audience to fight evil. Blake gets a surprise visit from his parents (Marcia Strassman and Eric Pierpoint), who are surprisingly understanding about his mental state. His mother tells him they showed up unannounced because, “We know that your audience hates phone conversations.” Blake advertises for a sidekick to help him fight evil, and meets a young, unemployed black comic, Antoine (Brian White), who doesn’t have anything better to do. Blake is hesitant to hire him (“I don’t do cliches”), but Antoine reassures him that he is not a stereotype. Another run-in with the Suspicious Character gets Blake arrested, and sentenced to visit Elizabeth (Dina Meyer), a beautiful court-appointed therapist. Blake immediately recognizes her as his Love Interest, and her demurrals only reinforce his belief. Even the fact that she’s engaged doesn’t dissuade him. “He must be a total loser compared to me,” he surmises. He thereafter refers to her betrothed as Doomed Fiance (Carlos Jacott). Blake has a difficult time getting Elizabeth to see things his way, but his jovial personality begins to win her over. Meanwhile, he learns the sinister nature of Suspicious Character’s behavior. The Movie Hero marks the feature debut of writer/director Brad T. Gottfred. It was shown at the 2003 Rhode Island International Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Upon realizing that their two young children are inherently evil, a pair of desperate suburban parents resign themselves to the fact that all they can do is document the youngsters’ cruelty on camera for all the world to see. A first-person shocker shot in the pseudo-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project and Diary of the Dead, Home Movie tells the chilling story of the Poe family, a middle class, suburban clan living in upstate New York. Clare Poe (Cady McClain) is a psychiatrist, and her husband David (Adrian Pasdar) is a Lutheran minister. Clare recently purchased a video camera to document her sessions, but when children Jack and Emily (real-life brother and sister Austin and Amber Williams) begin displaying some seriously disturbing behavior, the concerned mother can’t resist the temptation to make some home movies. At first the footage seems fairly benign, but then young Jack hurls a rock at his father’s face. Later, after Emily interrupts a tender moment by slaughtering a frog, a conversation between the parents reveals that the children have always been violent, and their anti-social behavior is getting worse by the day. When religion and medicine fail, the situation turns critical, prompting Clare to try some home counseling with her children as the patients. But it’s already too late for Jack and Emily, and now the most that Clare and David can hope to accomplish is to document every moment of the madness so others can understand the true extent of their suffering. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
