The Socalled Movie $17.24 If Josh Dolgin isn’t one of the most culturally and creatively eclectic musicians at work today, it’s hard to imagine who has him beat. Dolgin is a gay Jewish French-Canadian who plays piano and accordion, dabbles in rap, and plays music that fuses funk and hip-hop with klezmer, a form of Jewish traditional music. Known as “Socalled” (for a while he used the stage name “Heavy J,” then changed it to “So-called Heavy J” before shortening it to Socalled), Dolgin has recorded a hip-hop interpretation of a traditional Jewish Seder (with guest appearances from both Matisyahu and Killah Priest) and appeared on a cruise for Jewish music fans, sailing down the Dnieper River as he performed with a live klezmer ensemble. Filmmaker Garry Beitel profiles the life and music of this one-of-a-kind talent in the documentary The “Socalled” Movie, in which Dolgin talks about his art and inspiration as well as showing off some of his own experiments in filmmaking. Steal This Movie! $9.98 Steal This Movie! is a dramatic account of the tumultuous life and times of Abbie Hoffman, one of the most visible and influential figures of America’s 1960s counter-culture. (Its title was inspired by Hoffman’s irreverent “survival guide,” Steal This Book.) Hoffman’s founding of the Youth International Party (better known as the “Yippies”) and inventive acts of street theater — including an “exorcism” of the Pentagon and the riotous protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago — made him a household name and a star of the anti-war movement. They also earned him enemies, and he was eventually arrested for trying to sell cocaine to an undercover cop, a bust that he contended was a set-up meant to discredit him. Rather than face a long prison sentence, Hoffman went underground, leaving behind his wife and children and posing as “Barry Freed,” who became a respected environmental activist. In time, Freed acknowledged that he was Hoffman, spent two months in jail, and returned to activism full-time until his 1989 death. Silent Movie $9.79 Silent Movie is just that: a totally nonverbal comedy, save for one single line. Director Mel Brooks stars as a once-famous comedy director, who with his faithful assistants Dom DeLuise and Marty Feldman return to Hollywood with plans for a comeback. Brooks wants to return to the good old days by producing a silent movie (he explains this via subtitle). Producer Sid Caesar is agreeable, provided Brooks can line up top stars. Road, Movie $15.41 A young man without a purpose finds one bringing movies to the people in this comedy drama from Indian filmmaker Dev Benegal. Vishnu (Abhay Deol) is a guy in his mid-twenties who hasn’t figured out what he wants to do with his life yet, though he’s certain he doesn’t want to follow in the footsteps of his father, who peddles hair oil for a living. Years ago, Vishnu’s uncle operated a traveling movie theater, driving his truck through rural villages and setting up his makeshift cinema wherever he could find a paying audience. The uncle is donating his truck and projection equipment to a museum, and Vishnu has been drafted into taking the machine across the country to its new home. The rattletrap vehicle is a shadow of its former self, but as Vishnu rolls through the countryside it still attracts attention, and he picks up a handful of interesting hitchhikers en route, among them a young boy running away from home (Mohammed Faizal Usmani), a joyously opinionated old man (Satish Kaushik), and a beautiful woman (Tannishtha Chatterjee). And though the projectors don’t run much better than the truck, Vishnu finds there are still plenty of people interested in watching the old movies he’s carrying, and he unwittingly finds himself following his uncle’s footsteps as a gypsy showman. American Movie $11.98 Director Chris Smith made this documentary about independent filmmaking which had its world premiere at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. American Movie centers on a low-budget horror-film buff named Mark Borchardt, who grew up on such horror classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead. Now in his late twenties, he has decided to make the ultimate horror opus in the form of an indie feature entitled Northwestern, the scariest film ever made in his Wisconsin town. Filled with determination and passion (and very little else), this documentary follows Mark for a year and a half in the making of Northwestern. The audience sees Mark fending off creditors, including the IRS, and avoiding child support payments so he can make this direct-to-video flick. His efforts to round up cast and crew are disastrous, as there is nobody in his town who shares his knowledge and passion for moviemaking. Eventually he decides to star in his film and wears a dozen crew members’ hats as writer, producer, director, cameraman, editor, and soundman. American Movie follows this man with a dream to his dying uncle’s trailer park, where he raises three thousand dollars. Unable to make an entire feature for that price, he scraps the idea in exchange for completing one of his many abandoned short films, Coven, which also premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. Bean: The Movie $10.39 Comic actor Rowan Atkinson brought his bumbling character Mr. Bean from television to the big screen with this British comedy. Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) is a well-meaning but not especially bright fellow with a gift for making the worst of any situation. Bean is about to be fired from his job as a guard at the Royal Nation Art Gallery for sleeping on the job, but the Chairman (John Mills) intervenes at the last moment. To insure that his incompetence will manifest itself so completely that there will be no choice but to get rid of him, Bean’s superiors come up with a plan — they’ll send him to America to speak at a posh private gallery owned by George Grierson (Harris Yulin), where General Newton (Burt Reynolds) will display the most recent addition to his art collection, “Whistler’s Mother.” It’s even money whether or not the museum will still be standing before Bean is done; as if this weren’t enough, while in L.A. The film features a hilarious musical number in the hospital nursery, where newborns have the voices of major rock stars that include Jakob Dylan (Bob Dylan’s son), Iggy Pop, Lou Rawls, Lisa Loeb, and Patti Smith, to name a few. The story escalates when self-proclaimed leader Tommy Pickles is thrust into an impossible situation with the birth of his new brother, Dil Pickles. Real: The Movie $14.13 Helmed by Borja Manso, the Spanish-language omnibus feature Real: The Movie (aka Real, La Pelicula) pays homage to the Madrid-based Real soccer club, its superstar player, David Beckham, and its tie-in of international Real apparel, with a series of five fictional shorts and one documentary segment, connected only by their shared theme of the club itself. The first segment, set in Madrid, involves a rather low-key and ineffectual schoolteacher, Tomas (Javier Albala). At a loss to explain the enormous, sweeping popularity of Real, he decides to solve the mystery of the club’s rabid fan base by going straight to the heart of the action. The second, set in Japan, involves the insecure Koji (Keiichirou Sasaki), made increasingly jealous by his girlfriend Sayaka’s (Ari Ohta) preoccupation with Beckham. The third, set in Manhattan, involves amateur soccer player Megan’s (Jessica Bohl) crippling injury, and the inspirational stories of Real team member Ronaldo that help her bounce back. In the fourth, Maxi (Guillermo Herrera) and his grandfather Paul (Manuel Escolano), research the little-publicized 1963 kidnapping of Alfredo di Stefano. In the fifth, set in Senegal, die-hard Real fan Ansou must endure a two-day walk, once per week, just to reach a television set and catch a glimpse of his favorite team. And the closing number, set to inspirational music a la John Williams, houses tightly edited-together documentary footage of a shoot-out between Real Madrid and Barcelona. The Movie Hero $8.14 Blake (Jeremy Sisto) is like a lot of people living in L.A. He believes he has an audience following him around, watching everything he does. He addresses the camera nearly constantly, and it becomes clear that we are Blake’s audience. He spots a Suspicious Character (Peter Stormare of Fargo, who also contributes the film’s closing song) on the street and follows him. He tells the man, “I know what you did,” even though he doesn’t know. The cops warn Blake to stop harassing people, but he owes it to his audience to fight evil. Blake gets a surprise visit from his parents (Marcia Strassman and Eric Pierpoint), who are surprisingly understanding about his mental state. His mother tells him they showed up unannounced because, “We know that your audience hates phone conversations.” Blake advertises for a sidekick to help him fight evil, and meets a young, unemployed black comic, Antoine (Brian White), who doesn’t have anything better to do. Blake is hesitant to hire him (“I don’t do cliches”), but Antoine reassures him that he is not a stereotype. Another run-in with the Suspicious Character gets Blake arrested, and sentenced to visit Elizabeth (Dina Meyer), a beautiful court-appointed therapist. Blake immediately recognizes her as his Love Interest, and her demurrals only reinforce his belief. Even the fact that she’s engaged doesn’t dissuade him. “He must be a total loser compared to me,” he surmises. He thereafter refers to her betrothed as Doomed Fiance (Carlos Jacott). Blake has a difficult time getting Elizabeth to see things his way, but his jovial personality begins to win her over. Meanwhile, he learns the sinister nature of Suspicious Character’s behavior. Clare Poe (Cady McClain) is a psychiatrist, and her husband David (Adrian Pasdar) is a Lutheran minister. Clare recently purchased a video camera to document her sessions, but when children Jack and Emily (real-life brother and sister Austin and Amber Williams) begin displaying some seriously disturbing behavior, the concerned mother can’t resist the temptation to make some home movies. At first the footage seems fairly benign, but then young Jack hurls a rock at his father’s face. Later, after Emily interrupts a tender moment by slaughtering a frog, a conversation between the parents reveals that the children have always been violent, and their anti-social behavior is getting worse by the day. When religion and medicine fail, the situation turns critical, prompting Clare to try some home counseling with her children as the patients.
