Original Bliss

Original Bliss

$8.89

From one of Scotland’s most widely praised writers, named by Granta as one of the Twenty Best Young British Novelists: a beautiful and terrifying story of passion and pornography Helen Brindle thinks she has lost God–but it is simply love that she’s missing. She certainly can’t find it at home, with the violent, deadly Mr. Brindle: trapped in an abusive marriage, tormented by existential and personal doubt, she suffers from insomnia, emotional paralysis, and pathological inhibition. Until she meets Edward E. Gluck. Edward Gluck is a public personality, a renowned genius and group mental healer, guru to people like Helen through his famous self-help process; privately, he is painfully obsessed with masturbation and self-punishment, unable to employ his own fatuous self-help techniques to overcome his personal disgust and psychological anemia. Original Bliss tells the story of an excruciatingly awkward courtship between two soul- sick people–the one brutally shy, the other an exhibitionist–searching for a way to break out of their isolation. By turns acerbic and tender, and with remarkable economy and precision, A. L. Kennedy writes about the attempt to close emotional distances and fill physical voids, and the aching need for completion and healing. A brilliant American debut from one of Scotland’s finest young writers. From the Hardcover edition.

Darcy's Story

Darcy’s Story

$5.69

When Elizabeth Bennet first met Mr. Darcy, she found him proud, distant, and rude despite the other ladies’ admiration of his estate in Derbyshire and ten thousand pounds a year. But what was Mr. Darcy thinking? Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice has long stood among the most beloved novels of all time. The story of Elizabeth Bennet’s blossoming romance with "haughty, reserved, and fastidious" Fitzwilliam Darcy has enchanted readers for nearly two centuries. Yet, Mr. Darcy has always remained an intriguing enigma his thoughts, feelings, and motivations hidden behind a cold, impenetrable exterior . . . until now. With the utmost respect for Austen’s original masterwork, author Janet Aylmer loving retells Pride and Prejudice from a bold new perspective: seeing events as they transpire through the eyes of Darcy himself. One of world’s great love stories takes on breathtaking new life, and one of fiction’s greatest romantic heroes becomes even more sympathetic, compelling, attractive, and accessible, all through the imagination and artistry of a truly gifted storyteller.

Matchless: A Christmas Story

Matchless: A Christmas Story

$13.79

Every year NPR asks a writer to compose an original story with a Christmas theme. In 2008 Gregory Maguire reinvented the Hans Christian Andersen classic "The Little Match Girl" for a new time and new audiences. When it was first translated from Danish and published in England in the mid-nineteenth century audiences likely interpreted the Little Match Girls dying visions of lights and a grandmother in heaven as metaphors of religious salvation. Maguires new piece entitled "Matchless " reilluminates Andersens classic using his storytelling magic to rekindle Andersens original intentions and to suggest transcendence the permanence of spirit and the continuity that links the living and the dead.
